Tucked away down a brick alley in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is an Eastern-European-inspired cellar and a couple who sells gourmet salt. After visiting several salt mines in Salzburg and the Bavarian Alps, Don and Judit were inspired to open a specialty salt shop in the U.S. Their hope was to not only sell salt but to educate a population that’s afraid of salt about the benefits of it.

In the Salt Cellar you’ll find an impressive collection of infused salts including mouth-watering flavors like black truffle, merlot, and espresso; Himalayan salt products including lamps, deodorant, and cooking blocks; and bath and spa products. You’ll also find cookbooks with an endless number of ways to cook with salt. If you’re just looking for a few helpful tips, however, talk to the owners. Their expertise, and their ability to pick choice salts, extends beyond the cellar and into local restaurants. Eateries like Cure use Salt Cellar products on dishes such as the “merlot-infused sea salted Yukon gold potatoes.”

The next time you’re near Portsmouth, take a detour to the Salt Cellar and stock up. You’ll want goodies for your own gourmet salt shelf but you can also buy gift sets that are perfect for the foodies in your life. Note: They also have a second location in Portland, Maine.

In the meantime, you can find recipes and tips on how to cook with salt on the Salt Cellar’s blog.
