Law is not a profession that most people associate with mobility and international travel but that didn’t stop Brandon from believing that one day he could combine his two passions.

His wish list was grand. He wanted to live abroad, work as a lawyer, do work that is compelling, and travel in his free time.

For most people, one or two items alone on his list would be nice.

Brandon is not most people.

You Can Have It All

It didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it took 15 years and there were times throughout his career he thought he might have to compromise on something. Perhaps he’d have to sacrifice on the work in order to live abroad. But it never did come to that.

Now Brandon lives in Barcelona and travels all over Europe, Africa, and the Middle East working as a lawyer for an international corporation.

“I guess there’s a lesson in here for sticking to your guns,” he jokes.

The truth is that setting an intention and following his instincts also played a role.

Brandon worked hard, sought out experiences that could fuel his long term goal, and kept his eyes and ears open for the right opportunity.

Small Steps

Throughout his schooling and career, Brandon always kept travel top of mind. He took international law classes in college and entered a Masters of Law program in Singapore that focused on international law and human rights. It’s these types of choices that helped prepare him for the right opportunity down the road.

Finally, the stars aligned. He says a lot of luck played into it, but it wasn’t kismet. What is that quote about wearing overalls and being prepared to work hard? You can hear me fumble over the quote in the episode but here it is full:

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

Brandon dug in, worked hard, and as a result was able to check all the boxes on his wish list.

In this episode we talk about how to…

  • Set intentions
  • Craft your own experiences
  • Let curiosity guide you
  • Use travel and international interests as a strength
  • Grab opportunities that can help set you up for your long-term goals

We also talk about travel (of course)—the places he’s been and the people he’s met along the way.

“The things that motivate people worldwide are the same. People want to have good friends, live well, take care of their family. We all have so much in common.” —Brandon L, on episode 11 of the Wandering Workers Podcast
